Equipped with the right applications, a computer can be of great help in virtually any domain of activity. When it comes to designing and precision, no other tool is as accurate as a computer. Moreover, specialized applications such as AutoCAD give you the possibility to design nearly anything ranging from art, to complex mechanical parts or even buildings.
Suitable for business environments and experienced users
After a decent amount of time spent installing the application on your system, you are ready to fire it up. Thanks to the office suite like interface, all of its features are cleverly organized in categories. At a first look, it looks easy enough to use, but the abundance of features it comes equipped with leaves room for second thoughts.
Create 2D and 3D objects
You can make use of basic geometrical shapes to define your objects, as well as draw custom ones. Needless to say that you can take advantage of a multitude of tools that aim to enhance precision. A grid can be enabled so that you can easily snap elements, as well as adding anchor points to fully customize shapes.
With a little imagination and patience on your behalf, nearly anything can be achieved. Available tools allow you to create 3D objects from scratch and have them fully enhanced with high-quality textures. A powerful navigation pane is put at your disposal so that you can carefully position the camera to get a clearer view of the area of interest.
Various export possibilities
Similar to a modern web browser, each project is displayed in its own tab. This comes in handy, especially for comparison views. Moreover, layouts and layers also play important roles, as it makes objects handling a little easier.
Sine the application is not the easiest to carry around, requiring a slightly sophisticated machine to properly run, there are several export options put at your disposal so that the projects itself can be moved around.
Aside from the application specific format, you can save as an image file of multiple types, PDF, FBX and a few more. Additionally, it can be sent via email, directly printed out on a sheet of paper, or even sent to a 3D printing service, if available.
To end with
All in all, AutoCAD remains one of the top applications used by professionals to achieve great precision with projects of nearly any type. It encourages usage with incredible offers for student licenses so you get acquainted with its abundance of features early on. A lot can be said about what it can and can't do, but the true surprise lies in discovering it step-by-step.
AutoCAD 2022 [New]
For over 35 years, AutoCAD software has remained a viable design tool for professional designers and engineers, and a simple, powerful way to create engineering and architectural drawings. Since the introduction of AutoCAD, many other 3D drafting and visualization tools have been introduced and continue to grow in popularity. However, while other tools are often used to create and modify paper drawings, AutoCAD remains the first choice for most engineers, architects, designers, students and educators. It is also used to create 2D blueprint drawings, technical documentation and other engineering drawings and diagrams.
How AutoCAD Works
AutoCAD uses a Point-and-Click drafting style. You draw by clicking on points on a two-dimensional (2D) surface or by drawing lines on a two-dimensional plane. A “Point & Click” interface is more intuitive than traditional drawing methods. When using a mouse, you draw by moving a cursor on the screen and clicking on a point or line where you want the object to be placed. With AutoCAD, you need not know anything about the physical shape of the object. You simply start with the “Point & Click” interface, click the point where you want to start your line, and then click on the point where you want to stop your line.
Unlike other CAD software that make you start with a 3D object, AutoCAD starts you with a 2D surface. Then you can add a 3D layer of text, dimension, dimension line, etc., on top of the 2D surface. With AutoCAD, you can easily and quickly create drawings and 2D diagrams.
History of AutoCAD
The basic AutoCAD development team was founded in 1975 by John Walker, Bob White, and John K. Jones. Walker, White and Jones met at the first Autodesk Design Review in 1976, in San Francisco, California, and they continued to work together throughout the 1970s.
In 1981, the Autodesk Inc. was born. The initial company consisted of approximately 50 engineers and scientists, with the goal of developing computer-aided design (CAD) software for the drafting and analysis of architectural and engineering drawings. The new company initially used various contracts with universities and government research centers.
In 1982, Autodesk introduced the first generation of AutoCAD software, and the company began to develop CAD software for the desktop and on mainframe computers, with the goal

The National Association for Urban Planning Students (NAUPS) is a professional organization for students of urban planning, primarily in the United States. It was formed in 1958 as the Urban Planners’ Association. NAUPS is a member of the American Planning Association (APA) and the Urban Land Institute.
James G. Foresman was the founding president in 1959. He served in this capacity until the early 1980s. William J. Wilbur was the first regional director for the Ohio Valley Region, covering Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, and northern Pennsylvania. This position was created in 1961, following the reorganization of the APA. Eugene Miller was regional director from 1964 to 1968. Peter H. Rathje, formerly the staff economist for the Federal Highway Administration, was the regional director from 1970 to 1973. Joseph Price became the executive director in 1979 and served until 1999.
Current leadership is Sandra Martin, Executive Director, in Chicago, Ill. and President.
NAUPS holds an annual conference during the summer, attracting both presenters and attendees. Topics addressed at the conferences include transportation planning, environmental planning, housing, urban design, and public policy.
NAUPS sponsors an annual summer study course on urban issues. The course is for senior university students who are interested in pursuing a career in urban planning, but have limited knowledge of the field.
In order to meet the increasing demand for urban planning programs in the United States, NAUPS launched the online Master of City Planning degree in 2009.
The organization also undertakes an array of other projects. Some examples are:
The National Center for Transit Research
Urban Land Institute
National Association of Master Planners
